Almost 40 percent of British Columbians 35 and under identify as vegan or vegetarian, according to a new poll.

The poll – which also shows that the majority of Canadian vegans are under the age of 35 – was carried out by Dalhousie University’s Dean of the Faculty of Management, Sylvain Charlebois.

Responses from 1,049 adult Canadians were used in the survey, which was conducted by third-party data collector Qualtrics. Results are considered accurate within plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Charlebois said: “It’s quite astonishing. These numbers are the highest in the country.”

Data

The percentage of vegan/vegetarian British Columbians is more than triple the average for all Canadians.

Just 2.3 percent of Canadians (all ages) identify as vegan  – up to 7.1 percent vegetarian.

Vancouver

Vancouver in British Columbia is considered to be extremely vegan-friendly, with a host of plant-based restaurants as well as many vegan options on the menu at other eateries.

According to local media: “There may be a stereotype that Vancouverites are pretty enthusiastic about vegan food.

“So be it.”
